TITLE

REQUEST TO INITIATE 45-DAY NOTICE PERIOD
TO NAME PARK NO. 599 AS WEST EDGEWATER GREEN PARK

BODY
To the Honorable Board of Commissioners of the Chicago Park District

I. Recommendation

It is recommended that an order be entered authorizing the General Superintendent or his designee to initiate a 45-day notice period to solicit public input to name Park No. 599 as West Edgewater Green Park.

Proposed Park or feature: Park No. 599
Location: 1623 West Edgewater Avenue
Community Area: Edgewater
Ward: 40
Proposed Name: West Edgewater Green Park

II. Explanation

Park No. 599
The Chicago Park District assigns an official park number to every property. As the development of Park 599 began, the local block club (West Edgewater Area Residents-WEAR) reached out to community members regarding potential names for the new park. As a result of that outreach, it is proposed that the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners initiate the 45-day notice period to solicit public input to name Park No. 599 as West Edgewater Green Park. This proposal reflects the neighborhood in which the park is located, acknowledges the addition of green space to the community, and has the support of local residents.

Proposed Name: West Edgewater Green Park
Park 599 is a 1.08 acre property in the Edgewater Community Area of Chicago. The property was part of the former Edgewater Hospital Site. As part of the overall redevelopment of the site, the property was transferred from the City to the Park District in 2023. Currently, construction is nearly complete on the passive park, with the installation of required stormwater utilities, significant landscaping, a walking path, a drinking fountain, and benches and seating areas surrounding an open lawn. It is scheduled to open in Summer 2024.
